About Me / FAQ

About Me For all of my adult life, I have been involved in the technical side of the entertainment industry. This has allowed me to gain a detailed knowledge of how things are made, how they work, and how to improve them. I took these years of learning and applied it to my second endeavor, technical creative writing. Being able to put my ideas on paper for others to read, understand, and learn from proved I knew what I was talking about, which afforded me the opportunely of giving in-person seminars to groups of like-minded people wanting to learn more and hearing me speak about the technical side of things. Fast forward 20 years to my next and obvious quest. Voice-over audio and audiobooks. Because of my past experiences and being detail-minded, I can bring that talent to anything I speak about. Thus giving my voiceovers a deeper, more detailed meaning. Voice-Over FAQ Q: You mentioned that you wrote column articles for a trade magazine; which one was it? A: Actually, I created monthly column articles for two magazines, Play Meter Magazine and Slot Tech Magazine, from 1992 to 2010. Q: What sets you apart from other voice-over artists? A: I am highly detail-oriented. Preparing articles and giving public speaking seminars have taught me that details do matter. This knowledge is something I can apply, and you can hear it in my voice. Understanding the details of a product or service only makes the voice-over that much better. Like I say, “People can hear you smile.” FAQ A: Can you record your voice-over tracks in a file format other than MP3? Q: Most voice-over artists record their voice-over in a .mp3 file format. While I can do that, I prefer the .wav format. Yes, the file size is more significant, and the sound quality is taken up a notch. Long story short, the .mp3 file format uses an algorithm to condense the audio file, thus removing some of the audio nuances. A .wav file format keeps the audio richness and fullness intact, resulting in a better-sounding voice audio track. All of my voice-over samples and demos on this website have been recorded in .wav format. A: Are you concerned that A.I. (Artificial Intelligence) will replace you as a human voice-over artist? Q: Yes, I’m concerned, but what many people do not understand is that A.I. will never replace a human voice-over artist. As a human, I can control my voice to include many types of inflection, additional resonance, and audio detail that can be heard; this is something A.I. cannot do. A: I have heard the term ACX; what is it? Q: ACX is the operational part of Audible, Amazon's audiobook arm. ACX is an audio standard and a large group of voice artists that record audiobooks. When talking about voice talent for voiceovers, the ACX audio standard specifies how an audio track should sound (not too loud or soft, low background noise, etc.). Voice-over talent, including myself, uses the ACX standard to guarantee my voice-over audio is within pre-defined guidelines. The result is a better-sounding voice-over. The ACX format is typically designed to work with a .mp3 audio recording since that is the preferred audio format for audiobooks. I prefer to use ACX standard for all of my voice-over audio, including .wav audio.
